England 2-3 Spain: La Roja make Wembley bend

It took just 104 seconds for Lamine Yamal to freeze Wembley. Pressed by the Barcelona man, Marc Guéhi turns back towards his own goal, loses the ball near the box and lets the Spanish winger break through alone against James Trafford. The English goalkeeper, preferred to Jordan Pickford by Thomas Tuchel, can do nothing about it.

The rest of the first half hour looks like torture for the Three Lions, unable to build cleanly out from the back under Spanish pressing. Ferran Torres could have killed the match on his own: a goal ruled out for offside (8th), a one-on-one lost against Trafford (16th), then a shot too angled (27th).

Gordon and Kane turn the tide

Then La Roja eases off, and England takes advantage. In the 36th minute, Bellingham launches the counter-attack and sets up Anthony Gordon, who equalises with a precise strike. Wembley barely has time to sit back down: four minutes later, Nico O'Reilly gets past on the left, Harry Kane places a header at point-blank range, Cucurella deflects it just enough to beat Unai Simón. A complete turnaround in four minutes.

Coming out of the dressing rooms, Tuchel's side keep up the same momentum. In the 54th minute, after a VAR review, Italian referee Davide Massa penalises a foul by Rodri on Bellingham. Kane has the chance to make it 3-1, but his standing foot slips as he strikes: the ball crashes off the crossbar.

Baena, the decisive substitute

De la Fuente does not let the moment pass. Straight afterwards, he takes off Nico Williams and Ferran Torres, guilty of numerous lost balls, and brings on Álex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal. The match then changes complexion: Spain draws in the English press, plays behind the wingers and accelerates as soon as the defence loses its shape.

Five minutes after coming on, Baena capitalises on a lost ball from O'Reilly, receives from Olmo and equalises with a crisp strike from the edge of the box (60th).

Spain now control the match. In the 74th minute, Aymeric Laporte finds Baena with a long crossfield pass; the Atlético midfielder slides the ball into Oyarzabal's run, and the Real Sociedad forward chips it over Trafford. Two years after his Euro final in Berlin, the Basque punishes England once again.

Having regained control, La Roja manage the rest of the match with the composure of world champions. England push forward, Bellingham forces one last save out of Simón, Saka appeals for a penalty after contact with Cucurella. Nothing changes the outcome: Spain hold onto their lead and secure the win.

With this success, De la Fuente's side extend their unbeaten run to 39 matches. On Tuesday, they host Croatia. England, meanwhile, head to Czechia already having to digest a defeat.
