The news is now official: the 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be played in Istanbul, Turkey, from February 2 to 7. The tournament will therefore exceptionally leave Saudi Arabia, which had been hosting the competition for several years. The four teams involved will be FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad.
A temporary move, not a break
This change of destination does not reflect a questioning of the agreement with Saudi Arabia. The kingdom will host the Asian Cup from January 7 to February 5, 2027, which made it impossible to keep the Super Cup under its usual conditions. The existing agreement was therefore adjusted to allow for this one-off relocation, and Saudi Arabia is expected to regain its host status from the 2028 edition.
The Atatürk Stadium, a prestigious setting
The choice of Istanbul is no coincidence. The Turkish economic capital has solid experience hosting major international competitions. The competition will be held at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, a venue that entered European football legend during the 2005 Champions League final. The RFEF had studied several bids before settling on the Turkish proposal.
A considerable financial stake
Beyond logistics, this relocation underlines the economic importance of the competition for Spanish football. The RFEF estimates the total revenue generated by the Super Cup at 53 million euros, of which more than 20 million euros is redistributed to participating clubs and 26 million euros is directed towards non-professional football.
Istanbul thus represents a parenthesis in the recent history of the Spanish Super Cup. In 2027, Spanish football will set up camp on the shores of the Bosphorus before, barring any new changes, returning to Saudi Arabia for the following edition.
