Arsenal won the Community Shield by dominating Manchester City 3-0 in Cardiff. More than a prestigious victory, this final offered a first demonstration of the collective mastery of Mikel Arteta's side. City had the ball in spells, but Arsenal controlled the spaces, the transitions and, above all, the key moments.
An opening that changed the match
Arsenal wasted no time in making their mark. 24 seconds. That is all it took for Riccardo Calafiori to open the scoring after excellent work from Myles Lewis-Skelly. The fastest goal in Community Shield history immediately set the scenario Arteta had in mind: intensity, pressing and aggression.
City subsequently had more of the ball, but without truly taking control of the match. The London side remained compact, with perfectly managed distances between the lines.
As early as the 20th minute, David Raya set the tone by keeping out a dangerous strike from Phil Foden. Then, when Haaland finally found an opening, the Spanish goalkeeper stood firm again to deny the Norwegian.
Ødegaard, the conductor
Arsenal struck a second time shortly after. Martin Ødegaard was once again involved in the move, before Christos Tzolis intelligently pulled the ball back into the box for Kai Havertz, who made it 2-0 in the 28th minute.
The Norwegian captain delivered a particularly complete performance: creative, first defender, available in the channels and valuable in recovery, Ødegaard constantly set the tempo for the Gunners.
And he did not stop there. As early as the 48th minute, he scored the third goal after a superb run and a perfectly executed duel against Donnarumma. Tzolis, once again, was at the origin of the move.
City had the ball, Arsenal had the match
That is probably the main lesson from this final. Manchester City were able to build up play, but Arsenal denied them the spaces. Doku tried to create danger, Foden looked for the channels and Haaland attempted to drop deep, but Arteta's block consistently reduced their options.
When City did manage to break through, Raya was there. In the 81st minute, he produced another excellent save to deny Semenyo, following another important stop on Foden earlier in the match.
Arsenal therefore perfectly accepted dropping deeper at times in order to spring forward more effectively. On several occasions in the second half, the Gunners even cut City apart on the counter-attack.
Bruno Guimarães, a convincing debut
In his official debut for Arsenal, Bruno Guimarães showed why Arteta wanted him. Composed, aggressive in duels and capable of playing under pressure, the Brazilian quickly integrated into the London midfield.
He was, however, replaced at half-time by Declan Rice. This change did not prevent Arsenal from maintaining their control after the restart. On the other side, Haaland was neutralised, while Foden, despite a few flashes, never managed to make a lasting impact on the match.
Arsenal already sends a message
The Community Shield obviously does not guarantee a successful season. But this performance sends a signal that is difficult to ignore. Arsenal now possess the title, the team chemistry and, above all, that ability to control a big match without needing to monopolise the ball.
Arteta wanted to see whether his team was still hungry after their title. The answer arrived in 90 minutes: Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City. First trophy of the season. And the first warning shot for the entire Premier League.
