The Metropolitano is about to experience the first big fixture of the La Liga season. Atlético host Real Madrid this Sunday for a derby that pits two teams still under construction against each other, but already under pressure in the race behind Barça.
A year ago, the Metropolitano was the setting for a 5-2 that deeply marked Real Madrid's season. Twelve months later, the two teams meet again with new faces, two different coaches, and above all an immediate stake: not letting Barcelona pull too far ahead.
Real currently have 15 points after six matchdays, compared to 13 for Atlético. The Merengues have won five of their six La Liga matches, while the Colchoneros had a more uneven start before responding with two consecutive wins.
Real Madrid: plenty of talent, still some questions
José Mourinho has already found a formidable weapon: Kylian Mbappé.
The Frenchman is one of the most decisive players of this start to the season. He scored again at Elche on Tuesday, bringing his total to eight goals across all competitions. Alongside him, Vinícius Júnior remains a constant threat thanks to his speed and ability to attack space.
And behind them, Arda Güler is becoming increasingly important. His quality between the lines, his final pass, and his ability to create chances give Real a particularly interesting third source of danger.
But that is precisely where one of Real's big questions lies.
Mourinho has acknowledged that his team still needs to improve in controlling matches. At Elche, Madrid led 2-0 before seeing their opponents come back to 2-2, ahead of Espí's goal in stoppage time. Real therefore possess an impressive attacking force, but their balance still needs watching.
The defense will be particularly scrutinized against Atlético's transitions.
Atlético find their colors again
Atlético's start to the season had left some doubts. Two defeats against Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool preceded a spectacular reaction.
Since then, Simeone has put his team back on track: a 3-0 win at Real Sociedad, followed by a 4-0 demonstration against Osasuna.
And above all, Atlético have rediscovered their Metropolitano. The club is unbeaten at home this season, with two wins and a draw.
Álex Baena also arrives full of confidence. The Spaniard is currently Atlético's top scorer in La Liga with four goals. Julián Álvarez, absent for the win against Osasuna, is back in the squad after his muscle overload. Simeone still has to decide whether he will start the match or come on as a substitute.
The choice will be important: with Álvarez, Atlético have a player capable of dropping deep, combining, and attacking depth. Without him at kickoff, Simeone could favor a different profile before, possibly, adjusting his attacking setup.
The tactical duel: speed against control
Simeone knows exactly where the danger lies.

The Argentine coach has stressed their speed and the need to control space. His Atlético side will need to avoid turning the match into an open race, as any poorly controlled loss of possession could give Real the space they are looking for.
Conversely, Mourinho must find a way to protect his team when Atlético impose their intensity.
This is probably one of the keys to the derby: can Real control the tempo long enough to prevent Atlético from turning the match into a fight?
Because Atlético have other weapons too. Baena brings creativity, Lee Kang-in can create between the lines, and the presence of players like Griezmann or Álvarez gives Simeone several options for attacking the Madrid defense.

Finally, there will be the individual duel everyone is waiting for.

The Frenchman arrives with maximum confidence and will obviously be the first threat identified by the rojiblanca defense. But Real will not be able to rely on him alone. If Atlético manage to cut off his connection with Vinícius and Güler, Madrid will need to find other solutions.
On the other side, Álvarez's return could change a great deal for Simeone.
The derby will therefore be decided as much in the duels as in the spaces. A more flamboyant Real Madrid, but still needing to improve their control. An Atlético side in rebuilding mode, but boosted by two wins and carried by their Metropolitano. And in between, Mourinho and Simeone, two coaches who know perfectly well the particular nature of this fixture.
In Madrid this Sunday, potential will no longer be the question. It will be time to show up in the derby.
