AFCON 2027: 58 goals in two days, Senegal held, the favorites deliver

The first matchday of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers continued on Friday with 14 matches and 34 goals, following the 24 goals scored on Thursday. Over two days, Africa has therefore already produced 58 goals in this race towards the final tournament. The results and schedule for this first matchday have been confirmed by several specialist recaps.

Senegal held on opening day

For Senegal, this opening game leaves a sense of unfinished business. For his first outing as coach of the Lions, Patrick Vieira had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Mozambique. In Group J, Sudan therefore takes sole leadership after their win against Ethiopia (1-0). Senegal and Mozambique both have one point ahead of their respective away trips to Ethiopia and Sudan.

The big guns deliver

Several heavyweights, on the other hand, launched their campaign with a win. Algeria beat Zambia (3-1) after being pegged back to 1-1, before regaining the advantage. Morocco dominated Gabon (2-0) thanks notably to Noussair Mazraoui and Soufiane Rahimi, while Mali won 3-1 against Cape Verde, with a brace from Nene.

Nigeria also had to work hard to beat Madagascar (2-1), while Guinea-Bissau pulled off a fine result in Tanzania (2-0). Niger, Rwanda, Malawi, Gambia, Togo and Sudan also picked up three points.

In the other fixtures, Egypt and Angola played out a 0-0 draw, while Burkina Faso and Benin cancelled each other out 1-1.

The first matchday will conclude on Saturday with South Africa–Guinea and Kenya–Eritrea.
