AFCON 2027: CAF prepares a historic edition in East Africa

FootReporter · 25 août 2026

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is already being prepared in East Africa. For the first time in its history, the competition will be jointly organized by three countries: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

CAF has entrusted the organization of this edition to the East African trio, which will host the tournament from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

An AFCON hosted in three countries

This edition will be a first for the competition. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will pool their resources to host the 24 qualified national teams.

The project relies on several cities and infrastructures spread across the three countries. This joint organization is meant, in particular, to allow matches and tournament-related activities to be distributed across several territories.

The competition's official name is AFCON Pamoja 2027, 'Pamoja' meaning 'together' in Swahili.

Infrastructure at the heart of preparations

Preparations concern in particular the stadiums, training grounds, transport, accommodation and the various infrastructures needed to host delegations and supporters.

  • In Kenya, the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi, is one of the main infrastructures mobilized for the competition. The country is also working on several renovation and modernization projects for its facilities.
  • In Tanzania, Dar es Salaam is one of the competition's main hubs.
  • In Uganda, Kampala is notably preparing its infrastructure for the event.

The three countries are thus continuing their work in order to have facilities suited to CAF's requirements.

The schedule takes shape

The competition will begin on June 19, 2027 and end on July 17, 2027.

Before the tournament, the AFCON 2027 qualifiers must determine which national teams will join the three host countries and complete the field of 24 participants.

CAF is also preparing the various stages of the organization, including the final draw, the designation of competition venues and coordination with local organizing committees.

An important event for East Africa

This AFCON represents a major event for East African football. Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will have the opportunity to jointly host the continent's most important national team competition.

For CAF, this three-country organization also represents a new experience in how to set up an AFCON, with a competition spread across several territories and enhanced cooperation between the host countries.

A few months ahead of kick-off, preparations are therefore continuing in the three countries to make AFCON Pamoja 2027 the next major event in African football.
