The Women's AFCON 2026 is entering its final stretch in Morocco. After the quarter-finals, the title contenders are beginning to emerge and the competition has already produced some fine surprises.
🇲🇦 Morocco dreaming on home soil
The Atlas Lionesses eliminated South Africa (2-1) and have already secured their place in the semi-finals. On their own turf, the Moroccan women can legitimately dream of claiming the first continental title in their history.
Algeria also punched their ticket to the last four, following their victory against Ivory Coast (2-1). The other two semi-finalists will emerge from the Cameroon-Nigeria and Malawi-Ghana fixtures.
🇳🇬 Nigeria remains the clear favourite
With 10 African titles and reigning champion status, Nigeria remains the undisputed benchmark of continental women's football. Yet the hierarchy appears less settled than usual.
Morocco, Algeria, South Africa and above all Malawi have demonstrated their ability to unsettle the major nations. Malawi is indeed one of the revelations of the tournament: in their very first participation, the side finished top of their group, ahead of Nigeria and Zambia.
🌍 The 2027 World Cup on the line
This AFCON carries an additional major stake: it also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. The four semi-finalists will secure their spot at the World Cup directly. Two other African nations will retain a chance through the intercontinental play-offs.
The final is scheduled for 16 August in Rabat. Morocco dreams of glory, Nigeria wants to retain its crown and the outsiders are determined to write their own story. The final sprint of this Women's AFCON promises a wide-open, all-out battle.
