Christantus Uche out for the entire season after injury in friendly against Monaco

FootReporter · 8 août 2026

Christantus Uche will not set foot on any Liga pitch this season. The Nigerian international from Getafe suffered a serious right knee injury during a pre-season match against Monaco, following a challenge by Monegasque defender Christian Mawissa, who received a straight red card. Unsurprisingly, the punishment was not enough to prevent the worst.

The MRI confirmed a serious diagnosis: multiple ligament and meniscal injuries. Surgery is unavoidable, and Uche will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2026-2027 season.

Friendly matches, an underestimated danger

This type of incident serves as a reminder of a reality that the football world struggles to fully acknowledge. Pre-season fixtures are often presented as mere tactical laboratories — opportunities to test systems or integrate new signings. Yet the challenges remain physical, and the consequences can be dramatic, as the Nigerian's misfortune demonstrates.

A heavy blow for Getafe and Bordalás

The loss of Uche comes at a particularly bad time for the Madrid club. The striker had returned to Getafe after a season on loan at Crystal Palace and was expected to play an important role in José Bordalás's project for the coming campaign.

With just days to go before the Liga kick-off, the club must now rethink its plans. Whether through tactical adjustments or a forward signing in the transfer window, Getafe will have no choice but to compensate for the absence of one of its key attacking players for the entire season.
