Enzo Fernández booed at Stamford Bridge, Alonso shows his confidence

FootReporter · 16 août 2026

Part of Stamford Bridge booed Enzo Fernández on Saturday during Chelsea's victory against Real Sociedad (3-1). Coming on in the second half, the Argentine midfielder received a hostile reception from a section of the crowd, in a context where rumours of a move to Manchester City continue to stir the transfer market. Chelsea are said to have set his price at £120 million.

Alonso cuts it short: Fernández stays

Xabi Alonso has nevertheless displayed an unambiguous stance: he wants to keep his midfielder. Chelsea's new manager has already spoken directly with Fernández, even if the content of their discussion remains private. The Spanish coach's message, however, is crystal clear.

On the sporting front, the arguments in favour of the Argentine are plentiful. Last season, he scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists across all competitions. His ability to build play and drive forward represents a valuable profile within the system Alonso intends to put in place.

A system under construction

Against Real Sociedad, Chelsea operated in a 3-4-3 formation, offering a first glimpse of the principles Alonso wishes to instil. This tactical framework should, in time, give Fernández clearer reference points and a defined role at the heart of the game.

The contrast could not be more striking: part of the supporters still have doubts about the Argentine, while his manager has reserved a central role for him in his project. What happens next is now up to Fernández, who will need to turn Alonso's confidence into performances in order to win back Stamford Bridge.
