Saturday, August 29 delivered another evening full of lessons across Europe's major leagues. Between the Premier League, Liga and Ligue 1, several big clubs were in action, with mixed fortunes.
Liverpool held back again
At Anfield, Liverpool had to settle for a spectacular 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest. Trailing twice, the Reds found the resources to level the score. A frustrating result for Liverpool, who continue to drop important points along the way.
In the other English fixture of the day, Newcastle pulled off a fine result by winning 2-0 away to Tottenham. The Magpies secured a convincing victory, while Spurs are enduring a difficult start to the season.
Atlético impresses
In Liga, Atlético Madrid made a statement with a resounding 3-0 win over Sevilla FC. Los Colchoneros are confirming their ambitions and gaining confidence early in the season.
Real Sociedad also won, against Espanyol (2-1), while Betis suffered a heavy defeat away to Levante (5-2).
Lyon stumbles in Ligue 1
In France, Olympique Lyonnais were held to a draw by Le Havre (1-1). After their win on matchday one, OL failed to build on it and will need to quickly regain more control of their game.
Strasbourg, for their part, got the better of Lens (2-1), while Brest and Toulouse played out a spectacular 2-2 draw. Troyes also caused a surprise by winning away at Lorient (2-1).
Key takeaway: Liverpool and Lyon slow down, Newcastle confirms their form, and Atlético strikes hard.
