Belgium got off to a perfect start in the Nations League. The Red Devils won 2-0 away to Italy, on Friday evening at the Stadio Olimpico, in the first matchday of group A1. A victory that also marks Mark van Bommel's debut on the Belgian bench.
A controlled start
The Belgians quickly took charge. Mika Godts opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with the young PSG player capitalizing on a fine offensive sequence to put Belgium ahead. A first goal for the national team, rewarding an aggressive start from the visitors.
Roberto Mancini's Italy tried to react, but Belgium controlled the spaces well and looked dangerous in transition. With Kevin De Bruyne creating chances and players able to quickly attack the flanks, the Red Devils gradually forced the Azzurri to defend deeper.
Lukebakio seals the victory
The decisive second goal finally came in the 69th minute. Dodi Lukebakio doubled the lead and put Belgium in a very comfortable position.
Mancini, back on the Italian bench, never found an answer against a Belgium side that was more effective at both ends of the pitch. For Van Bommel, this victory is a first strong signal in a group that also includes France and Turkey.
Belgium therefore takes three precious points ahead of hosting France on September 28.
