UEFA has suspended Mattéo Guendouzi for four club competition matches following the incidents that occurred on 26 August at the end of the second-leg Champions League play-off between OL and Fenerbahçe, won 2-1 by the Turkish club. The French midfielder has also been fined €50,000. However, two of the four matches carry a one-year suspended sentence.
UEFA notably accuses Guendouzi of insulting people present in the stadium, provoking spectators and breaching the fundamental rules of good conduct. A mass brawl had broken out after the final whistle.
The Guendouzi card
In concrete terms, Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahçe's first two matches in the Champions League league phase:
- The home match against AS Roma on 10 September
- The away trip to Aston Villa on 14 October
The other two suspended matches carry a one-year suspended sentence. Guendouzi will therefore be able to return to European competition against Slavia Prague on 20 October, barring any further sanction during his probationary period.
The other sanctions
Mason Greenwood has also been sanctioned. The English forward receives a fine of €30,000 and a one-match suspension, suspended for one year. He therefore remains available to face Roma.
UEFA has also handed down a five-match suspension to Antonio Ferreira, OL's goalkeeping coach, two of which are suspended, for serious assault and injury.
Finally, both clubs received various fines for the incidents and breaches observed during this match.
