Nine years after leaving the Premier League, Hull City made a spectacular return to the top flight by beating Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday. The Tigers built their victory in the first half, scoring twice from set pieces.
Two goals, two set pieces
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring as early as the 17th minute, from a corner. In the 38th minute, Nobel Mendy doubled the lead with a header, from a free kick delivered by Regan Slater.
Manchester United never managed to get back into the match. Brought on in the second half, Marcus Rashford tried to add more danger, but the Red Devils remained too blunt going forward.
Hull's goalkeeper, Konstantinos Tzolakis, also denied an attempt from Bryan Mbeumo in the second half, preserving the scoreline in his side's favour.
A warning for Manchester United
This defeat is all the more striking given that Hull City, freshly promoted, got the better of a Manchester United side that approached this new season with the ambition of confirming last season's resurgence.
For Hull, the evening will go down in history: the club had not beaten Manchester United in the league for 52 years.
The scenario is also symbolic: two goals from set pieces were enough to bring down the Red Devils.
One matchday, one defeat, but above all a first serious warning for Manchester United.
