Did Morocco Forget to Be Bold?

Football can be cruel sometimes. It does not always reward the most daring. But it rewards even less those who overthink.

Morocco leaves this World Cup with a remarkable run and a logical elimination against France. It is not the result that raises questions. It is the manner.

Over an hour of excessive caution

For more than an hour, the Atlas Lions mostly sought to close spaces, slow the game down and prevent Les Bleus from expressing their attacking power. An understandable choice — almost logical, even, against a side capable of turning a match on an acceleration from Mbappé, a dribble from Dembélé or a moment of inspiration from the bench.

But a World Cup quarter-final is rarely won simply by limiting risks. It is also won by accepting to take some.

The Morocco that had impressed throughout the tournament was not just a disciplined side. It was a team capable of pressing high, breaking lines, pushing Hakimi forward and imposing its own rhythm. On Thursday evening, that version stayed in the dressing room for far too long.

Telling statistics

The statistics, for their part, tell part of the story. Morocco barely existed offensively for over an hour. Their first real period of pressure only appeared after France opened the scoring, and their intensity only became truly sustained in the very final minutes.

Caution offers no guarantees

Of course, no one can honestly claim that a more ambitious Morocco would have eliminated France. Les Bleus are probably the most complete team in the tournament: they know how to win in an open game as much as in a closed one.

But that is precisely the point — when an opponent is capable of adapting to every scenario, should you really build your game plan solely around reducing risks?

A few days earlier, Senegal had chosen a different approach. The Lions of Teranga had been bold, had unsettled Les Bleus, before eventually yielding to fatigue, late substitutions, a few individual errors… and French talent. Two different approaches, two identical eliminations. That does not prove that all-out attacking was the answer. It simply serves as a reminder that at this level, caution offers no additional guarantees.

The one true regret

That is perhaps the only regret this quarter-final will leave behind. Not the elimination itself. But the lingering feeling that Morocco only truly began to play once they were behind on the scoreboard.

We will never know whether a bolder Morocco could have brought France down. What we already know, however, is that a more cautious Morocco did not manage to.
