Netherlands crush Sweden and march towards the last 16

FootReporter · 20 juin 2026

The Netherlands delivered a dazzling attacking display this Saturday at Houston's NRG Stadium. Facing Sweden in the second round of Group F at the 2026 World Cup, Ronald Koeman's side claimed a resounding 5-1 victory, moving to the top of the group ahead of the Tunisia-Japan clash. A place in the last 16 now looks like a mere formality.

As early as the 5th minute, Brian Brobbey set the tone by throwing himself into the box to finish off a slick team move, before doubling the lead in the 17th minute on another low cross from Dumfries, winning each aerial battle against Isak Hien. After the break, Cody Gakpo took over: tapping in at close range in the 47th minute, he completed his brace seven minutes later with a precise right-footed finish. Despite a counterattacking goal from Elanga (59th) briefly reigniting the Swedes, substitute Crysencio Summerville — on at half-time — wrapped things up with a clinical low drive in the 89th minute.

This emphatic performance underlines the collective strength of a Netherlands side who remain unbeaten in the tournament. With six points secured before their final group game, the Oranje are virtually through to the round of 16. Sweden, meanwhile, suffer their first defeat and must respond urgently to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The Dutch will next face Tunisia in the third and final Group F matchday, a fixture that could allow them to seal top spot and shape a favourable path through the knockout rounds.
