Ligue 1: What is OM's real championship this season?

FootReporter · 13 septembre 2026

The question arises with greater force after the 1-0 defeat suffered in Rennes. At the Roazhon Park, Adrien Thomasson scored the only goal of the match after a header knock-down from Moussa Al-Tamari, himself found by a cross from Ludovic Blas.

This setback is the third in a row for Marseille in the league, following defeats against Monaco and Paris FC. A run of results that has dropped OM to 11th place, provisionally, in the standings, with only three points on the board.

The Genesio card

Asked after the match about the need to lower the club's ambitions, Bruno Genesio declined to comment. The Marseille coach recalled that defining the league objectives was not his responsibility, preferring to focus on analyzing his team.

Genesio notably pointed to his players' difficulties in maintaining their level of performance over time. OM shows good spells, but still struggles to extend them long enough to control matches.

A squad thoroughly reshaped

This situation comes in a particular context. Marseille went through the summer transfer window without a single signing, while recording several major departures.

  • Medina
  • Rulli
  • Aubameyang
  • Greenwood

With a squad considerably reshaped and a difficult start to the season, the question of Marseille's ambitions is therefore already being raised. The podium, the club's traditional objective, now seems much harder to reach. Could OM's championship ultimately be played out more in the fight for European spots or the upper mid-table?

Two decisive fixtures

The answer will depend on a quick reaction. Before hosting Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille must first face Beşiktaş in the Europa League. Two fixtures that could already give a first indication of Bruno Genesio's team's ability to reverse the trend.
