Champions League: Arsenal strikes a major blow in Naples

FootReporter · 9 septembre 2026

Arsenal began its European campaign with a particularly important win. The Gunners won 1-0 away to Naples, at the end of a match largely dominated by the Londoners.

A London-side dominance from kick-off

In the electric atmosphere of the Diego Armando Maradona stadium, Arsenal quickly took control. Mikel Arteta's players launched attack after attack and created several clear-cut chances, without managing to capitalize on their dominance.

Naples held firm thanks to their defense and several saves from their goalkeeper. But the Italians struggled enormously to build their attacks. Arsenal in particular managed to considerably limit Naples' opportunities after the break.

Ødegaard makes the difference

The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute. After another attacking sequence, Martin Ødegaard found the opening with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box. The ball hit the post before ending up in the back of the net.

Arsenal could even have extended their lead in the final minutes, but the Gunners lacked composure in several situations.

Precious points for what lies ahead

The result remains narrow, but the performance was far more convincing. With clear dominance in play and a particularly solid defense, Arsenal leaves Naples with three points that could weigh heavily in the race for qualification.

For Naples, however, this defeat confirms a difficult start to the season and already puts the team under pressure for the rest of their European campaign.
