CAF Champions League 2026-2027: African club football resumes

FootReporter · 31 août 2026

The new season of African interclub competitions is about to begin. The 2026-2027 CAF Champions League will officially launch its campaign with the first preliminary round starting this week.

The first-leg matches are scheduled for 4 to 6 September, ahead of the second-leg fixtures on 11 to 13 September. The second stage of qualifying will then take place in October.

A long road to the group stage

This new edition will once again bring together the big names of African football, but the road to the group stage will start very early for several clubs.

In total, 61 teams are entered in the Champions League preliminary rounds. The top-ranked sides get direct access to the second round, while the others will already have to fight over two matches to continue their journey.

The Confederation Cup will also resume during the same period, with its first preliminary round scheduled for 4 to 6 September.

For African clubs, the goal is already clear: clear the first hurdles to reach the group stage, then move closer to the continental title.

The African season is underway.
