Liverpool got their European campaign off to a perfect start. In their opening Champions League match of the season, the Reds came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid (2-1) on Wednesday evening at Anfield, in an intense contest that remained undecided for a long time.
The Madrid side strike first
Andoni Iraola's men were nonetheless caught out first. In the 17th minute, Julián Álvarez found Marcos Llorente in behind the defence. The Spanish midfielder, particularly inspired against Liverpool, finished perfectly to give the Madrid side the lead.
Liverpool regain control before half-time
Liverpool gradually took control of the match. Florian Wirtz looked dangerous, while Alexander Isak constantly put pressure on Diego Simeone's defence. The Reds' efforts were finally rewarded just before the break: after excellent collective build-up play, Dominik Szoboszlai equalised with a precise strike.
Mac Allister turns the match around
After the restart, Liverpool quickly turned the match around. A move started by Rio Ngumoha allowed Alexis Mac Allister to win the ball at the edge of the box. The Argentine then unleashed an unstoppable left-footed shot past Jan Oblak (2-1, 50th minute).
Atlético tried to come back, notably with the introduction of Ademola Lookman, but Liverpool held firm until the final whistle.
A successful first for Iraola
For Andoni Iraola, this victory represents a successful European debut on the Reds' bench. Liverpool thus begin their new Champions League adventure with three precious points and already confirm their ability to rise to the occasion on big European nights.
