The Swiss Football Association has confirmed that Breel Embolo will ultimately not take part in any of the Nati's next four Nations League matches, against North Macedonia, Scotland, Slovenia and then North Macedonia again. The forward had nevertheless initially been called up by Murat Yakin and was due, after serving his suspension for the first match, to rejoin the squad for the following three matches.
The federation gave no detailed explanation for this decision. It comes after the revelation of a conviction handed down against Embolo on 25 November 2025 by the Basel-Stadt prosecutor's office for repeated incitement to document forgery, in a case linked to fake Covid certificates. According to Swiss media, the forward received a suspended monetary penalty of 20 daily fines of 3,000 Swiss francs each.
The Breel Embolo case
Questioned by the St. Galler Tagblatt, the forward, now playing for Atlanta United, admitted he had come to understand that his behaviour was not correct and said he had taken responsibility for it. He accepted the court's decision, which has become final.
His case comes just days after that of Granit Xhaka. The Swiss captain was also dropped from the squad after admitting to having bought a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate. The federation stated that his situation would be reviewed after this series of matches.
Switzerland therefore begins its Nations League campaign without two of its key players. They will face North Macedonia on Saturday in Skopje, before meeting Scotland, then Slovenia and North Macedonia once again. Embolo, for his part, will miss this entire gathering.
