Liverpool eliminated Tottenham from the Carabao Cup this Tuesday night at Anfield, by a score of 3-1. Another difficult evening for Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs, whose start to the season continues to turn into a nightmare.
Tottenham had, however, started well. The Londoners quickly brought intensity and created several chances. But as has been the case since the start of the season, the problem remains the same: the final touch.
Liverpool, for their part, did not need many opportunities. In the 21st minute, Alexis Mac Allister collected a ball in the box and found the top corner to open the scoring.
The Reds then doubled their lead after the break. In the 54th minute, Cody Gakpo finished off another attacking move to make it 2-0.
Tottenham respond, but too late
The Spurs eventually found a way through. In the 69th minute, Conor Gallagher capitalised on an error by the Liverpool goalkeeper to pull one back with a header.
An important goal in symbolic terms: Tottenham had still not scored against a Premier League side this season. But this response was not enough.
In stoppage time, Dominik Szoboszlai ended the suspense with a superb volley, sealing Liverpool's progression for good. 3-1, final score.
De Zerbi and Tottenham struggling
This elimination further increases the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham remain without a win after four Premier League matchdays, with only two points on the board and no goals scored in the league.
The ambitious summer transfer window was supposed to help Spurs move up a level. For now, the new signings are struggling to settle in.
Liverpool, despite a heavily rotated side, continue on the other hand their run in the Carabao Cup. Mac Allister, Gakpo and Szoboszlai made the difference. Tottenham, meanwhile, are still searching for the right formula.
