OL were a goal down. They needed at least two goals to turn the tie around. In a packed Groupama Stadium, Lyon delivered the answer everyone was waiting for: a 3-0 victory over Sparta Prague and a place in the Champions League play-offs. After the 2-1 defeat in the first leg, Lyon overturned the tie with authority.
A sharp start, momentum restored
Paulo Fonseca had asked his players to take the game by the scruff of the neck. They did just that. Far more aggressive in their pressing and far more determined in their forward runs, Lyon quickly pinned Sparta back in their own half. Corentin Tolisso was one of the driving forces behind this reaction.
In the 20th minute, the Lyon captain unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box. Jakub Surovcik pushed the ball away, but Ernest Nuamah was on hand to follow up and level the tie on aggregate. Lyon had rediscovered their momentum.
Sparta had not entirely disappeared, however. Their players continued to look for space and the match remained open. But the dynamic had shifted. Loïs Openda, making his first start in a Lyon shirt, made his presence felt with runs in behind the defence — and it was on one of those runs that the match would tip decisively.
The red card that reshuffles the deck
In the 34th minute, Adam Ševinský intervened as the last defender on Openda and was sent off. Sparta were reduced to ten men and now had to hold on for more than an hour.
Lyon then had to show patience. The numerical advantage did not immediately translate into a flood of chances: the Czechs defended in a deep block for a long time, and OL were sometimes lacking precision in the final third. But this time, Lyon did not panic.
The breakthrough, then the verdict
In the 66th minute, a superb collective move found Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who finally gave OL the lead on aggregate. Tolisso was involved once again, delivering the final assist.
Six minutes later, Tyler Morton slammed the door shut for good. The English midfielder found the net in the 72nd minute to score Lyon's third goal. 3-0. Tie overturned.
The closing stages confirmed Lyon's control. Sparta did attempt to salvage some pride, but Lyon never truly allowed doubt to creep back in. Beaten 2-1 in Prague, the Rhône club won 3-0 at home and progressed on a 4-2 aggregate score.
A response that says it all
This qualification speaks above all to one thing: a squad's ability to bounce back. After a difficult first leg, Paulo Fonseca revised his approach, notably lining up Openda, Nuamah and Fofana to add more weight to the attack. His side played forward, pressed high and imposed a tempo far higher than in the first leg.
The final hurdle before the Champions League league phase: Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club now stands between OL and a place in Europe's most prestigious competition. After Prague, Lyon did not merely earn a victory — they gave themselves back the right to dream of a return among the continental elite.
