Malick Fofana experienced a completely wild final day of the transfer window. Courted by both Sunderland and Crystal Palace, the Belgian winger ultimately set his sights on Sunderland, who thus pull off one of the most spectacular transfers of the night.
An initial agreement shaken up by Crystal Palace's entry
It had all started, however, with an agreement reached between Lyon and Sunderland. But Crystal Palace joined the race at the very last moment. Their manager, Pierre Sage, knows Fofana perfectly well, having managed him back when he was still at Lyon.
The two English clubs ultimately reached an agreement with Olympique Lyonnais. What remained was a crucial decision: that of the player himself, the sole master of his fate.
Two planes, one choice
The scene has already become emblematic of this transfer window night: two private planes were waiting for Fofana at Lyon airport, one heading to London, the other to Sunderland.
The player ultimately decided in favour of the Black Cats. The transfer is estimated at around 30 million euros, plus 5 million in bonuses, as well as a sell-on clause for Lyon on any future resale profit.
A new challenge in the Premier League
At 21 years old, the young Belgian is thus leaving Lyon to discover the Premier League. His explosive profile, his speed and his ability to beat defenders on the outside convinced Sunderland to make him their new record signing.
The English club had refused to let the player slip away despite Crystal Palace's late surge back into the race. A determination that was ultimately rewarded, at the end of a day during which Fofana literally had a choice between two destinations.
