Paris Saint-Germain showed a much more reassuring face against Manchester United. Three days after their defeat against Mallorca, Paris held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw, on Saturday in Gothenburg, just days ahead of the European Super Cup.
Mbaye decisive again, Kvaratskhelia more visible
The Parisians quickly took the lead thanks to Ibrahim Mbaye. As early as the 2nd minute, the young Senegalese forward finished off a fine combination with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Dro Fernandez. Another encouraging performance from Mbaye, who continues to impress Luis Enrique.
Kvaratskhelia, for his part, looked more inspired than in the previous match, even if he still lacked consistency in the final touch. In the second half, the Spanish coach introduced several key players — Vitinha, João Neves, Nuno Mendes and Marquinhos — in order to give them match sharpness ahead of the official kick-off to the season.
Mbeumo responds, Safonov decisive
Manchester United gradually grew into the game and Bryan Mbeumo equalised in the 32nd minute. The English forward was one of the main threats for Manchester and could even have scored a second goal were it not for several decisive interventions from Matvei Safonov.
Among the Red Devils, Andrey Santos also stood out. Active in duels and effective in ball recovery, the Brazilian midfielder put in a notable performance before being substituted in the second half.
Tielemans' debut, Mount concern
Youri Tielemans made his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt. Coming on in the second half, the Belgian midfielder brought his experience in the middle of the park and quickly fitted into United's setup. A brief first outing, but an encouraging one.
The only real downside for the Red Devils remains the early exit of Mason Mount, who picked up a knock in the first half.
Positive takeaways on both sides
Ultimately, this 1-1 draw leaves both camps with reasons for satisfaction. Paris responded after the setback against Mallorca and Mbaye continues to make his mark, while Manchester United can take heart from the performances of Mbeumo, Santos and the promising debut of Tielemans.
