PSG: The Lucas Chevalier threat looms over Matvey Safonov

FootReporter · 6 septembre 2026

PSG suffered their first home defeat of the season, beaten 1-2 by AS Monaco. In this match, Matvey Safonov was notably at fault on the second goal conceded.

This setback comes during a difficult period for the Russian goalkeeper, who has conceded eight goals over the last five matches, across all competitions.

The Lucas Chevalier card

Safonov had established himself as the number one last season, durably taking the upper hand over Lucas Chevalier. Since January, the Frenchman has not played an official match with PSG.

Chevalier was nevertheless courted on the transfer market this summer, but he chose to stay in Paris to try to win back his place. After Safonov's recent struggles, the competition between the two goalkeepers could therefore be reignited.

For now, however, Luis Enrique continues to trust the Russian. The coach will have to determine whether this trust remains justified if Safonov's performances do not improve.

The debate is therefore open at PSG: can Chevalier take advantage of this difficult period to reclaim the number one spot?
