The news is now official. Red Bull has announced the appointment of Roger Schmidt as Head of Global Soccer, replacing Jürgen Klopp, who left to take charge of the German national team. The coach will take up his role on 1 October 2026.
A familiar face for Red Bull
Free since his departure from Benfica, Roger Schmidt, 59, returns to an environment he knows inside out. A former coach of Red Bull Salzburg, he will now be tasked with overseeing all clubs within the Red Bull network and defining their sporting strategy on a global scale.
In its press release, CEO Oliver Mintzlaff was full of praise for his new executive, commending his expertise, his ability to develop young talent and his in-depth knowledge of the Red Bull philosophy.
An unprecedented role after a career on the touchline
Having left his mark on the dugouts of Salzburg, Leverkusen, PSV Eindhoven and Benfica, Schmidt now faces a challenge of a radically different nature. He will no longer be managing a team on a day-to-day basis, but will instead be steering the sporting development of Red Bull's entire football empire, with the ambition of continuing the legacy built by Jürgen Klopp.
