Senegal loses one of the most important goalkeepers in its recent history. Édouard Mendy officially announced his international retirement this Sunday, at 34 years old, after 59 caps with the Lions.
Having joined the national team in 2018, Mendy accompanied the great years of Senegalese football. He notably took part in the continental triumph of 2021, won in Cameroon in 2022, before remaining a key figure of the generation that continued to carry the Lions to the highest level.
His international journey was also marked by two World Cup appearances, in 2022 and then in 2026. Through his performances and his status as starting goalkeeper for several years, Mendy gradually established himself among the important figures of the national team.
A new cycle under Patrick Vieira
This decision comes as Patrick Vieira begins a new cycle at the helm of the Lions. The new head coach will now have to find his successor in goal, with several options already present within the Senegalese squad.
Beyond his 59 caps, it is above all the memory of a goalkeeper associated with a historic period that will remain. Mendy was part of the team that gave Senegal its first major continental title and experienced the major competitions that defined this generation.
After Sadio Mané, and with several key players also reaching a turning point in their international careers, Senegal is clearly entering a new era.
