Tuchel recalls Alexander-Arnold and Palmer, but issues a warning to both Englishmen

FootReporter · 19 septembre 2026

Thomas Tuchel unveiled on Friday his first squad list since the 2026 World Cup. The England manager notably recalled Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer, both of whom were absent from the group for the World Cup in North America.

The Three Lions will play four Nations League matches during this international window: Spain on 26 September, Czechia on 29 September and 6 October, and Croatia on 3 October.

Alexander-Arnold must earn back his place

Alexander-Arnold returns to the national team for the first time since June 2025. The Real Madrid full-back has 34 caps with England. However, Tuchel has clearly set out his demands.

'[He needs to] perform, that's how it is. It's a competition.'

The manager sees this return as an opportunity for the player to fight for his place.

Palmer returns with the numbers to back it up

Cole Palmer also returns to the Three Lions after missing out on the World Cup. His start to the season with Chelsea weighed on the decision: four goals and two assists in six matches. Tuchel noted that 'his numbers are back', while also pointing out that the player 'has a point to prove'.

Foden and Gibbs-White still absent

Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White remain outside the squad. Several other internationals are also missing, notably due to injuries:

  • Reece James
  • Dan Burn
  • Dean Henderson
  • John Stones
  • Jordan Henderson
  • Djed Spence

This new squad list comes after England finished third at the World Cup, having been beaten 1-2 by Argentina in the semi-final before overcoming France 6-4 in the match for bronze.
