Brahim Hemdani has been appointed head coach of the Algerian national team by the Algerian Football Federation. He succeeds Vladimir Petkovic, whose contract the FAF terminated in early August 2026, despite an extension that was supposed to keep him in charge until 2028.
Under the Swiss coach's leadership, Algeria had qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America. But the adventure ended in the round of 32, with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland. In January, the Fennecs had already been eliminated in the AFCON quarter-finals in Morocco, beaten 2-0 by Nigeria.
The Hemdani option
Trained at AS Cannes, having gone through Strasbourg before joining Olympique de Marseille between 2001 and 2005, then Glasgow Rangers until 2009, Brahim Hemdani earned four caps with Algeria. His coaching experience remains limited, but he managed Marignane-Gignac-Côte Bleue FC from 2022 to 2025, winning the National 2 championship in 2022-2023 and securing promotion to National.
A little more than a month after his appointment as head of Algeria's under-21 team, Hemdani led that squad to a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto. To assist him with the senior team, the FAF has appointed Antar Yahia as assistant coach and Moussa Saïb as general manager.
First fixtures
Hemdani must now prepare for Algeria's upcoming matches, as part of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
