Lamine Yamal separates the Ballon d'Or from PSG's Champions League triumph

FootReporter · 19 septembre 2026

Lamine Yamal weighed in on the Ballon d'Or debate during his interview with Jorge Valdano. For the FC Barcelona forward, PSG's Champions League victory should not automatically make a Parisian player the favorite for the individual trophy.

The young Barcelona player clearly separates collective success from individual reward. In his view, the Ballon d'Or should above all crown the player who stood out as the best and most singular over the whole season, rather than simply rewarding titles or statistics.

Yamal, for that matter, fully embraces his own candidacy.

For me, Mbappé and I are the two best in the world.

He thus defends his own case for the trophy.

The Spaniard also discussed Barça's difficulties against teams capable of imposing high intensity. He specifically mentions Bayern Munich and PSG, two sides that force Barcelona players to run a lot and stay focused throughout the match.

Conversely, Yamal believes that matches against Arsenal are more based on possession and tactical battles.

PSG nonetheless remains a benchmark in his eyes. Yamal names them among the teams capable of winning another Champions League, while noting that winning back-to-back European titles is particularly difficult.

One upcoming fixture will quickly put this analysis to the test: Barça will travel to Parc des Princes on October 20 to face PSG in the Champions League.
