Arsenal 2-0 Manchester City: a masterclass in tactical control at the Community Shield

Arsenal struck hard and fast. From the very first seconds of the Community Shield, the Gunners made their intentions clear: high press, high tempo, a determination to give Manchester City no respite. Then the match changed its complexion. Arsenal deliberately eased off with the ball, allowing City to spread out — without ever offering them the spaces to take advantage of it. The problem for Manchester City is plain to see. Doku attempts to cause problems, but consistently finds himself caught in a pincer by two or three defenders. As soon as the Belgian accelerates, a second and then a third player arrives to close off the inside channel. The spaces to beat his man or attack in behind are virtually non-existent.

Phil Foden is also having very little influence. He did manage one shot that was pushed away by Raya, but his impact remains limited against the Londoners' tight grid. As for Haaland, rarely served in his preferred zones, he had one good opportunity from a Doku pass — once again, Raya proved decisive. Arsenal are managing to prevent City from regularly finding their centre-forward in the conditions where he becomes devastating.

By contrast, Arsenal look remarkably assured in their decision-making. Ødegaard is excellent in midfield: available, precise, always capable of setting the direction of the first pass. Alongside him, Bruno Guimarães already looks perfectly integrated. The Brazilian brings control, aggression and above all an ability to drive forward that gives the London midfield greater variety.

On the right flank, Arsenal are particularly dangerous. Madueke and Guimarães combine with fluidity, while Havertz's movement constantly forces City's defence to readjust its positioning. The second goal is a precise illustration of this ability to accelerate at the most opportune moment.
