AS Roma: Gasperini sets the record straight on Manu Koné's transfer

FootReporter · 6 septembre 2026

Manu Koné ultimately stayed at AS Roma despite strong interest from Chelsea in the final hours of the summer transfer window. The English club had made progress on the deal, but Gian Piero Gasperini opposed his midfielder's departure.

The Manu Koné situation

The Italian coach had already closed the door in a press conference after the win against Lecce. 'Can Koné leave? Absolutely not,' he had replied, also stating that the Roma ownership was not in favour of a sale.

Talks nevertheless picked up pace in the final hours of the window. Chelsea reportedly proposed a deal worth around 60 million euros, with the idea of also including Jamie Gittens' loan in the package.

Gasperini ultimately got his way. Koné stayed in Rome and is part of the squad that has made a perfect start to the season. The French midfielder therefore retains an important place in the coach's plans, who considers his profile essential to the balance of his team.
