Cristian Romero leaves Tottenham for Atlético Madrid for €40M

FootReporter · 13 août 2026

Cristian Romero is set to leave Tottenham and join Atlético Madrid. The two clubs have reached an agreement of around 40 million euros, bonuses included, for the Argentine defender. The transfer now needs to be finalised with the remaining administrative formalities.

A profile tailor-made for Simeone

At 28 years old, Romero returns to La Liga after five seasons in the Premier League. His profile fits perfectly with Diego Simeone's requirements: aggressive in duels, intense, solid in the air and comfortable playing out from the back.

For Atlético, this represents a significant addition to a defence that the Argentine coach was eager to strengthen. With extensive international experience with the Albiceleste, Romero is expected to sign a contract until 2031.

A new chapter for Tottenham

In London, the departure of the captain marks a significant milestone in the squad's rebuild. Romero had joined the Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, before establishing himself as one of the key figures in the London defence.

Atlético thus acquire a defender of character, while Tottenham begins a new cycle. Romero, for his part, returns to a league he knows well and a manager who had long been pursuing him.
