Jean-Clair Todibo has emerged as one of Olympique de Marseille's defensive priorities this summer transfer window. The Phocaean club is closely monitoring the situation of the French centre-back, under contract with West Ham, and competition for his signature is beginning to ease.
Napoli looks elsewhere, Marseille breathes easier
Napoli, who were recently among the serious contenders, now appear to have moved in a different direction. The Italian club are making progress on the Benoît Badiashile track, which has considerably reduced their interest in the French defender. For OM, this withdrawal represents an opportunity: the room to manoeuvre in the deal has been noticeably widened.
A profile that ticks all the boxes
Marseille's interest is no coincidence. Todibo, 26, possesses several qualities the club is looking for: a French international, strong in both aerial and ground duels, he is also comfortable building play from defence. Developed at Toulouse FC before joining FC Barcelona in 2019, he subsequently played for Schalke 04, Nice and West Ham, accumulating solid experience at various levels of European football. His thorough knowledge of Ligue 1 is an added asset in the eyes of the Phocaean club's executives.
The financial structure, the main sticking point
The major obstacle remains the format of the transfer. West Ham want to sell their defender on a permanent basis, while OM are reportedly exploring a loan with an option to buy, in order to limit the immediate impact on their finances. This divergence largely explains why the deal has not yet been concluded.
Having finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, Marseille are aiming to return to the top of the table and consolidate their European ambitions. Strengthening the defensive line is among the summer's priority projects. The Todibo file therefore remains open — and, with Napoli's withdrawal, OM now have extra room to make their case.
