Inter got off to a perfect start in defending their Italian champion title. The Nerazzurri won 4-1 against Monza on Saturday evening at San Siro, in the opening matchday of Serie A.

This victory extends Inter's fine record on the opening day of the league: the club has not lost its first Serie A match since 2018.

Diouf sets up Calhanoglu

Hakan Çalhanoğlu quickly opened the scoring, as early as the 6th minute, with a powerful strike from outside the box. Senegalese player Andy Diouf was behind the goal thanks to an assist.

Monza however responded before half-time. Gustavo Varela, on his Serie A debut, equalised in the 29th minute with a curled shot.

Pio Esposito, the move of the match

Inter regained the lead at the start of the second half thanks to Piotr Zielinski, who capitalised on a poor intervention by Pizzignacco.

Andy Diouf then made the difference once again. His cross found Pio Esposito, who scored the third goal with a magnificent back-heel flick in the 55th minute.

Yann Bisseck definitively sealed the win in the 63rd minute, from a lay-off by Esposito.

Diouf already decisive

On his first Serie A matchday with Inter, Andy Diouf finished the game with two assists, a particularly convincing start for the French midfielder.

Manuel Akanji also hit the crossbar with a header, before being replaced by John Stones, who made his official debut in the Nerazzurri shirt.

Inter therefore begin their season with a convincing 4-1, sending an early message to the Scudetto contenders.
