Olympique Lyonnais let a golden opportunity slip. Despite taking the lead just before half-time, les Gones fell 2-1 on Sparta Prague's pitch in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round. A result that seriously complicates their mission ahead of next week's decisive clash at the Groupama Stadium.
A deceptive first half
Long dominated in terms of play, OL nevertheless went into the break with the advantage thanks to an own goal from Martin Suchomel. Lyon benefited from this stroke of luck even though Sparta Prague had already created several clear-cut chances and had even seen a goal ruled out for offside early in the match.
But this lead did not mask the difficulties shown by Paulo Fonseca's men, who were frequently unsettled by the intensity and pressing of the Czech champions.
Sparta turns the match around
After the break, the hosts were duly rewarded for their efforts. Matěj Ryneš first levelled for both sides before John Mercado gave Sparta Prague the lead a few minutes later. Within the space of a few minutes, the match had completely swung and Lyon never managed to regain control.
Les Gones did have a golden chance to retake the lead, but Corentin Tolisso missed a penalty, a turning point that weighed heavily on the outcome of the match. Despite a few opportunities late on, Lyon lacked precision in the final touch and leave Prague with a one-goal deficit.
Everything is still possible in Décines
This defeat does not condemn Olympique Lyonnais, but it now forces the Rhodaniens to win the return leg in front of their own supporters. A two-goal victory would be enough to secure their qualification for the next round of the Champions League play-offs.
OL will, however, need to show a completely different face. Too vulnerable defensively and dominated in duels for much of the match, the Lyon club knows it will need to raise its level to avoid a premature elimination.
Qualification remains within reach, but there is no longer any margin for error. The appointment at the Groupama Stadium already looks set to be the first major turning point of Lyon's season.
