OM start their season at home against Strasbourg with a comfortable 4-0 win

FootReporter · 22 août 2026

OM started their home season in the best possible way. For this opening matchday of the 2026-2027 Ligue 1 season, Marseille comfortably beat Strasbourg at the Velodrome (4-0), launching the Bruno Genesio era in ideal fashion.

Amine Gouiri was the main architect of this victory with a brace. The Marseille forward first found the net right after the break, before converting a penalty in the 68th minute. Keyliane Hikram Abdallah and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg then added to the score late in the match. For Abdallah, who came on as a substitute, it was the first goal of his Ligue 1 career.

Amine Gouiri's card

Two goals to start the season: Gouiri could not have dreamed of a better sign. His brace, including a perfectly converted penalty, already confirms his importance within the Marseille setup.

A match that turned after the break

The match had nevertheless long looked more even. Strasbourg held firm in the first half, before seeing the game slip away right after the restart. Gouiri's goal first changed the dynamic, before Samir El Mourabet's sending-off in the 59th minute made things even harder for the Alsatian side.

Down to ten men, Strasbourg then conceded a penalty converted by Gouiri. OM took advantage of their numerical superiority to definitively take control of the match and score two further goals in the closing minutes.

A tricky summer context for OM

For Marseille, this convincing win comes in a particular context. The club started the season without a single summer signing and still has to deal with constraints linked to its wage bill.

Bruno Genesio in fact acknowledged after the match that departures might be necessary before the club can speed up in the transfer market. The number of players concerned has not been set and could reach three, four or five depending on the club's needs.

Regrets for Strasbourg

For Strasbourg, this first outing inevitably leaves some regrets. The team held for a half before quickly giving way after the restart, and El Mourabet's sending-off definitively tipped the match.

OM thus provisionally top Ligue 1 after this opening matchday. Above all, Marseille send an early message: with Gouiri already decisive and a squad capable of stepping up after the break, Bruno Genesio's start is particularly promising.
