Manchester City has moved into action for Enzo Fernandez. The Manchester club made an offer of £120 million for the Chelsea midfielder, but it was rejected by the Blues. The two clubs are nevertheless continuing discussions as the summer transfer window closes this Tuesday, September 1st.
Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea in 2023 from Benfica for €121 million. The London club had set his valuation at £120 million as early as August, but Manchester City had not made an offer within the deadline imposed by Chelsea at that time. The situation changed in the final hours of the window, with direct negotiations opening between the two clubs.
The Enzo Maresca card
The main link between Fernandez and Manchester City is named Enzo Maresca. The Italian coach knows the Argentine midfielder perfectly well, having managed him at Chelsea, and now wishes to reunite with him in Manchester. Fernandez himself is said to be in favour of this possibility.
The deal, however, remains dependent on an agreement between the two clubs. Chelsea are notably seeking to secure his replacement before allowing their midfielder to leave. The London club is working on two options:
- Lamine Camara, for whom an offer of £38.5 million was rejected by Monaco
- Manu Koné
Real Madrid had also been linked with Fernandez, but the Spanish club officially denied making any approach to sign the player.
A transfer window that could still break records
Manchester City have already set their new transfer record this summer with Elliot Anderson, signed for £116 million. A move for Fernandez at £120 million or more would therefore represent a new record for the club during this same transfer window.
City have also significantly overhauled their midfield with the departures of Tijjani Reijnders, Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Nico Gonzalez. Signing Fernandez would thus allow the Manchester club to offset part of these departures.
Time is now running out. Discussions continue between City and Chelsea as the Premier League transfer window is set to close this Tuesday at 11pm in England, or midnight in Senegal.
