Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 4-1 in the 2nd matchday of Liga. Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick, opening the scoring in the 40th minute before adding two more goals. Vinicius Jr completed Madrid's tally.
This hat-trick puts Mbappé at the top of Liga's scoring charts after two matchdays, ahead of Aubameyang, Raphinha, Fermín, Mariano and Roberto Fernández, all with two goals. The French forward had not scored on the 1st matchday, however.
The Mbappé card
Mbappé had already been named Liga's top scorer in the previous two seasons. This start to the season follows the same pattern: a goalless 1st matchday, then a hat-trick that immediately restores his status as the Spanish league's leading attacking reference.
After the match, he posted on social media his now-iconic phrase, 'Not happy? Hat-trick', accompanied by a top hat emoji and three footballs. This phrase dates back to an interview given for the show Intérieur Sport, when he was playing at AS Monaco at age 20, behind Radamel Falcao and Valère Germain in the club's attacking pecking order.
José Mourinho, who was in charge of this match on his return to Real Madrid thirteen years after his last spell there, praised his forward's performance while downplaying the significance of individual statistics: he said he would rather see him score 40 goals while winning titles than 60 without winning anything.
Thanks to this win, Real Madrid provisionally take top spot in the league with 6 points from 2 matches.
