Real Madrid is on the verge of completing one of the most lucrative transfers of its summer. According to the Spanish press, Fulham has reached an agreement with the Merengue to sign Gonzalo Garcia for around 70 million euros.
A world-stage revelation, but ruthless competition in Madrid
The figure may come as a surprise for a 22-year-old player who was never truly an undisputed starter. Yet Gonzalo Garcia had thrust himself into the spotlight during the 2025 Club World Cup, scoring 4 goals in 6 matches. But upon his return to La Liga, he never managed to establish himself in the face of competition from Kylian Mbappé. Across the entire 2025-2026 season, he finished with 8 goals in 39 appearances, across all competitions.
Arbeloa, the man behind the transfer
The explanation for this sizeable investment lies largely with Fulham's new manager, Alvaro Arbeloa. The former Real Madrid full-back knows Garcia well and has made him his attacking priority for the coming season. Convinced by their coach's arguments, the London club's executives agreed to meet the financial demands of the Madrid club.
An ideal deal for the Merengue
From Madrid's perspective, the outcome is more than satisfactory. The club receives a significant sum for a player confined to a substitute role, while retaining a buy-back clause that allows them to keep a hand on the player's future. Should Gonzalo Garcia go on to fulfil his potential in the Premier League, the Merengue would still have the option to bring him back.
