The 2026 World Cup has barely closed its doors and club football is already reclaiming its place. After an exceptional summer marked by the World Cup, Europe's major leagues are preparing to kick off a new season that promises to be electric. From the favourites' opening matches to the first blockbusters on the calendar and the return of the Champions League in September, here is everything you need to know before the restart.
Restart dates for the major leagues
Spain will be the first of the four major leagues to get under way, followed a week later by England, France and Italy.

Every league serves up matches in its opening rounds that could define an entire season.
Liga
Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappé begin their defence of the domestic title under considerable pressure, while FC Barcelona and Lamine Yamal will be looking to immediately seize back control. The two giants' first away fixtures will be watched closely ahead of the big appointments in September.
Premier League
The English top flight gets off to a flying start with several standout fixtures on the opening day:

Ligue 1

The packed schedules of Europe's big clubs
- Real Madrid: Liga restart in mid-August. Objective: reconquer the Champions League after the World Cup. A decisive opening period before their C1 debut.
- FC Barcelona: The Catalan club are once again placing their faith in the youth embodied by Lamine Yamal. The Blaugrana will need to find their rhythm quickly before what promises to be an intense month of September.

September: the return of European nights
Barely had the leagues got under way than the Champions League returns. The league phase begins from 8 September, with a very dense schedule through to the end of January. The fixtures will be known following the draw expected at the end of August.

The 2026-2027 season will allow no time for adaptation. The calendar compressed by the World Cup means clubs must be ready to perform immediately. Between early domestic clashes, tricky away trips and the very rapid return of European competition, the favourites will have no margin for error.
