Rodri to PSG: Luis Enrique pushes, but the deal remains complex

FootReporter · 26 juillet 2026

Luis Enrique is said to have personally pushed his sporting directors to make a move for Rodri. The Spanish midfielder, named best player at the last World Cup and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, plays for Manchester City under a contract running until June 2027. According to RMC Sport, PSG have contacted the Citizens to find out the conditions for a possible transfer.

The Parisian club are not alone in this pursuit: Real Madrid are said to already have an agreement with the player, while FC Barcelona are also closely monitoring the situation.

A profile that fills an identified gap

From a tactical standpoint, the arrival of Rodri would address a problem Luis Enrique has been grappling with for two seasons: the absence of a true defensive midfielder capable of covering Vitinha and playing out cleanly under a high press. The Catalan coach frequently makes do with a mobile double pivot, but no current starter fits the ball-winning, play-building profile that Rodri has made his own both with Spain and Manchester City.

A midfield traffic jam in prospect

That said, this deal does not respond to a numerical need. The Parisian midfield is already congested, and integrating Rodri could create a damaging logjam for Fabian Ruiz, whose contract extension until 2030 was made official only ten days ago.

PSG's interest therefore reflects a market opportunity more than an urgent sporting necessity. One major unknown remains: Manchester City, not in the habit of letting their key players go cheaply, will undoubtedly set their own terms for allowing one of the world's best midfielders to leave.
