Vladimir Petković on his way out, Algeria looks for a new head coach

FootReporter · 3 août 2026

Vladimir Petković will no longer be Algeria's head coach. According to several corroborating sources, a mutual agreement has been reached between the Swiss coach and the Algerian Football Federation. The separation is now official.

Petković had taken charge of the Fennecs with the ambition of reviving a team in search of direction following the failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. His tenure was marked by mixed results and growing pressure from both supporters and officials. The decision to terminate the contract by mutual consent reflects a shared desire to avoid a prolonged standoff, to the benefit of both parties.

For the Algerian Football Federation, the task at hand is immediate. Algeria must reposition itself in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and cannot afford a lengthy period of uncertainty at the head of the national team. The profile of the successor will be closely scrutinised: the Fennecs are looking for a head coach capable of restoring a clear playing identity and uniting a group of undeniable talent. With the Petković chapter closed, the FAF must act quickly.
